The recent earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria on February 11th 2023, hit close to home, reminding me of the devastating aftereffects the people affected will now be facing.

Earthquakes like other hazards of nature are unpredictable making them one of the most devastating of all-natural disasters. A disturbing yet inevitable fact for humans is that none of the measurement scales, science, or equipment is able to predict the exact way and time an earthquake will occur.

The earthquake has left behind a trail of destruction, loss, and casualties and for those who have lost their loved ones, the aftermath of the earthquake is just as devastating as the event itself. We are inundated with images of destroyed buildings, stray dogs, and the heroic efforts of rescue workers. However, what we often fail to see or comprehend are the long-lasting effects that such an event can have on the survivors. We are unable to gain an intimate understanding of their thoughts and emotions, and can only imagine the extent of the psychological trauma that follows.

So how can we help ?

In the wake of a major earthquake, it can be challenging to determine the most effective way to offer assistance. Based on my own family’s experience with the earthquake that struck Albania in 2019, we found that fundraising and donating money was the most impactful way to help. While it may seem that donating physical items like used clothing and household supplies can provide immediate aid, the reality is that such donations can be overwhelming for distribution centres and may not reach the intended victims, thereby creating more work for aid organizations.

Relief charities advise that donating money is the most effective way to help after a natural disaster, as it allows aid organizations to purchase the necessary supplies and allocate resources to those in need.  Fundraising is also an ideal option for long-term giving, as there is no deadline to withdraw funds, and one can continue to contribute as long as recovery efforts continue, whether that is for a few weeks or several years. Overall, donating money to reputable relief organizations is the most efficient and impactful way to offer assistance to earthquake survivors.

During these difficult times in Turkey and Syria, please consider offering any possible help or donations if you can. Your support can make a significant impact in helping those affected.
