International Women’s Day is a global celebration to recognise the social, political, economic, and cultural achievements of women. It is a focal point for the women’s right movement that emerged out of efforts in the early 20th century from suffrage to promote gender equality in 1909.

As a young woman myself I am aware that recent statistics such as, “globally 23% of women earn less than men” or “1 in 3 women experience domestic violence”, shows that continuing to celebrate IWD is very important so that one day these numbers do not exist.

There has been quite a lot of discussion in recent months as to if IWD is still necessary/relevant. Below are some of the thoughts on the significance and importance of the event that some of the inspirational leaders in our network have shared with us:

“International Women’s Day is one of the most important times throughout the year when we recognize women inspiring women at a global level. As a female leader in both private business and Corporate America for over twenty-years, I have seen first-hand the impact of gender inequality in the workplace. Although we are seeing a rise of women receiving opportunities in both junior and senior positions, a consistent wage-gap for workers of all levels still exists. My mission is to ensure the amazing women who work with me are given equal opportunities to succeed. Let’s continue to inspire each other to ensure positive changes and increased opportunities. The ability to drive change exists in all of us. We have the strength to create equal opportunities for our children’s future, not only in the workplace, but also for the multiple areas of women’s rights needing our support for change. I hope my young daughter will look back at this time and thank all of us for being change agents. We must continue to follow the footsteps of the women who fought before us to bring resolve to the many issues facing women across the globe- women who are inspiring each other on International Women’ Day in celebration of our historical achievements and those yet to be made.”

“While the pandemic has taught us how to be flexible, agile, and adaptive to constant change, being able to hold onto who you are during that journey can seem like a formidable ask for women. However, in order to sail through those exciting challenges, as well as maintain your grace under fire, I find that “authenticity” is the key. Therefore, be yourself, be genuine, be authentic. Happy International Women’s Day.”

For the sake of past generations that have worked tirelessly to promote women’s rights and future generations that I hope will not need to, we must continue to spread awareness and celebrate female achievement. At Morgan Latif we continue to strive for equality amongst genders both in and outside of the workplace and will continue to support days like IWD due to the importance it holds for future generations.
