Mental health has been thrown around as a bit of a buzzword in recent years. But what actually is it? WHO’s definition states “Mental health is critically important for everyone, everywhere, and goes beyond the mere absence of a mental health condition. It is integral to well-being, enabling people to realize their full potential, show resilience amidst adversity, be productive across the various settings of daily life, form meaningful relationships and contribute to their communities”.

This means that mental health whether good or bad determines our overall experience in life. Working in the corporate world can sometimes not be conducive to good mental health due to stresses, long hours, isolation etc so what can businesses do to ensure their employees have well looked after?

At Morgan Latif, we provide our employees with private healthcare, access to a GP any time of the day, gym subsidies, a great pension plan as well as many other benefits. But what are we doing as a business to protect mental health?

Through our private healthcare our employees have access to trained mental health professionals as well as counselling sessions (you take your car in for an MOT once a year so why not give your mind an MOT?!) As well as this we have a trained Mental Health first aider who can provide not just emergency assistance but also preventative solutions to those experiencing ill mental health. We understand that mental health is just as important as physical health so if needed our employees know they can take time off to recover if they are struggling.

We hold regular workshops to explore different coping strategies to stress and anxiety in the workplace making the conversation so normal that everyone is talking. In December, we held a workshop where 3 of our own employees shared their own stories about their mental health journey looking at depression, anxiety, eating disorders and OCD to normalise the fact that those who live with mental health conditions can still be happy, successful, and living full lives, that there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

We truly believe that if we look after our employee’s well-being in all aspects our success will be a byproduct of this. What could you be doing to increase your team’s well-being?
